Why Do Ultrasounds Matter?

Many women consider getting an ultrasound as an extra, unnecessary step, especially if they’re considering abortion. But did you know that experts estimate that as many as 26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage? That’s over one in four pregnancies!

There is so much more to learn about your pregnancy. Let us provide you with the information you need to make a confident decision for your future.

What Is an Ultrasound?

It may seem strange to use sound waves to create an image, but that is precisely what an ultrasound does. At The Women’s Centers, a nurse performs our ultrasounds. Sound waves are sent into your body to assess the health and development of your pregnancy.

The sound waves bounce off structures inside your body. Those sound waves are converted into images you can view on a screen. There are two types of ultrasounds: abdominal and transvaginal. We offer both at The Women’s Centers.

What Will I Learn?

An ultrasound answers three critical questions.

#1. Is my pregnancy developing, or have I had a miscarriage?

Because it takes a woman’s body time to return to pre-pregnancy hormone levels, it is possible to get a positive pregnancy test result even after a miscarriage. If the ultrasound detects a fetal heartbeat, your pregnancy is continuing.

#2. Is the pregnancy located in my uterus?

Only the uterus can hold a growing pregnancy. Although rare, some pregnancies implant and grow outside the uterus. These are known as ectopic pregnancies. An ectopic pregnancy can be extremely dangerous, even life-threatening. If discovered, you should see your healthcare provider as soon as possible.

#3. How far along am I?

Knowing the gestational age is particularly important if you are considering an abortion. The FDA approves the use of abortion drugs through 10 weeks of pregnancy only. You may need to consider a surgical procedure otherwise.
