Get The Facts: Medical & Surgical Abortion

There are basically two types of abortion: medical, which is also known as the abortion pill method, and surgical. Generally, how far along you are in your pregnancy determines the type of abortion you qualify for.

One of the easiest and most accurate ways to determine gestational age is with an ultrasound. Find out how you can qualify.

The Abortion Pill Method

The abortion pill uses two drugs to terminate a pregnancy and remove it from your body. The first drug, mifepristone, blocks the hormone progesterone. All pregnancies need progesterone to develop. Without it, the pregnancy ends.

Misoprostol, the second drug, causes bleeding and contractions to expel the pregnancy from the body. Since a woman takes the abortion drugs in her home without medical oversight, it’s vital to know what symptoms to expect and the risks to be aware of.

Surgical Abortion

Abortion providers determine the surgical procedure required based on how far along the pregnancy is. Pregnancies in the first trimester qualify for suction or vacuum aspiration. Providers use medical instruments, such as a scraping tool or forceps, during later pregnancies.

Protecting Your Health and Safety

There are limits to abortion, according to your physical and mental health, the type of medications you’re taking, and your pregnancy. Our nurses administer free and confidential pregnancy tests to ensure accurate results. If your test is positive, we’ll schedule you for a limited obstetrical ultrasound. An ultrasound helps ensure your safety.

The Women’s Center does not perform or refer for abortion.
